Last Friday, I attended my first ever art exhibit opening gala (just to make it more fabulous) called Nature's Clowns through my fab friend, Ariel. He is friends with the artist, Scooter Laforge. The show is a one-night only event at Envoy Enterprises, a cute little studio in the East Village that houses three spaces (an east & west gallery for temporary installations and a cube for projects on a long-term scale) on the upper level and a bar and performance space in the basement area. Scooter's art is a mixture of childhood imagery (fluffy animals, clowns, bright colors), gay sex and more. My favorite is Auto Hulk which is a guy sucking on his own manhood. I also got to talk to Scooter about one painting, which he called Trazadone. Trazadone (or Trazodone) is a known medication for insomnia and he said that he made the painting when he was having panic attacks and named it after the pill.
Events like this is a good way to meet people and I got to talk to about a couple of Scooter's friends. But instead of the paintings, we were chitchatting about the hot guys among the crowd. I just wish I know more about art to discuss the nitty gritties of the technical side of things, but as one patient told me, who was a portrait painter herself, it's all about how the painting, or any art for that matter, speaks to me and the kind of feeling it evokes. Auto Hulk speaks to me about power with no-holds barred, devil-may-care attitude and the willingness to say "Fuck you, world! I can do this!" I wish I could be that person.
One day, I hope to attend these kinds of shows and perhaps buy myself a painting. That would be awesome. Incidentally, Scooter also makes silk-screened shirts. Ariel and I will probably visit his studio one day and get me a Scooter shirt.
